Electric vs Petrol Cars — The Honest Comparison

The argument is usually fought on emissions and misses the deciding factor. Where you park at night matters more than range, price or anything on the spec sheet.

The electric-versus-petrol debate is usually conducted as an argument about emissions, which is the part most people have already made up their minds about.

The practical decision turns on something far more boring, and it is rarely mentioned first.

The short answer

Where you park at night decides it. With a home charger, an electric car is cheaper to run, cheaper to service and more convenient — you never visit a fuel station. Without one, you depend on public charging: slower, considerably more expensive, and it removes most of the advantage. Everything else is secondary to that one question.

Why home charging is the whole argument

An electric car with home charging is not a car you refuel. You plug it in when you park, and it is full every morning. For most people, whose daily driving is well within range, that means never stopping to fuel at all.

An electric car without home charging is a car you must take somewhere to charge, and wait. That is worse than a petrol station, not better — the stop is longer, and rapid charging is much more expensive per kilometre than charging at home.

Same car. Opposite ownership experience.

So before anything else: can you plug in where you park overnight? A garage, a driveway, an allocated space, or reliable charging at your workplace. If yes, electric is worth serious consideration. If no, be sceptical of the running-cost claims, because they assume home charging.

Running costs

Electric, charging at home — usually substantially cheaper per kilometre than petrol. The exact gap depends on your electricity tariff and local fuel prices, and an overnight tariff widens it further.

Electric, on public rapid chargers — often several times the home rate, sometimes approaching petrol costs. This is the number the marketing does not lead with.

Servicing favours electric clearly. No oil changes, no spark plugs, no exhaust system, no timing belt. Regenerative braking means brake pads last far longer. Fewer moving parts, less to go wrong.

Insurance is often higher, partly because repairs cost more.

Tyres wear faster — electric cars are heavier and deliver torque instantly.

Purchase price and depreciation

Electric cars generally cost more up front, though the gap has narrowed and incentives vary enormously by country — check what applies where you live, since it can change the arithmetic completely.

Depreciation is the genuine uncertainty. The technology is moving quickly, which is hard on used values: a five-year-old electric car competes against new ones with better range and faster charging. Petrol depreciation is well understood and more predictable.

If you buy new and keep the car a long time, this matters less. If you change every three years, it matters a lot.

Where each is clearly better

Electric wins when:

  • You can charge at home
  • Your driving is mostly local and predictable
  • You live where electricity is cheap relative to fuel
  • Traffic is heavy — electric cars are at their best in stop-start driving, where petrol engines are at their worst
  • You value quiet and instant response

Petrol wins when:

  • You cannot charge at home
  • You regularly drive long distances at short notice
  • You live somewhere with sparse charging infrastructure
  • You tow — range drops sharply
  • Winters are very cold — cold weather reduces range noticeably
  • Budget is the constraint and you are buying used
The cold-weather point is underplayed

Range falls in cold weather, both because battery chemistry is less efficient and because heating the cabin draws directly from the battery — a petrol car heats itself with waste engine heat for free. If you live somewhere with hard winters, plan around a meaningfully lower winter range than the advertised figure.

The battery question

The common fear — a sudden expensive failure — has not matched experience.

Batteries degrade gradually, losing a small percentage of capacity over years, rather than failing outright. Most manufacturers warrant them for around eight years against significant loss, which tells you what they expect.

Two practical habits extend life: avoid routinely charging to 100% when you do not need it, and avoid relying exclusively on rapid charging.

Hybrids

Worth mentioning because they suit exactly the person for whom neither answer above is clean.

Regular hybrid — no plugging in, better fuel economy in town, no infrastructure requirement. A sensible default for anyone who cannot charge at home.

Plug-in hybrid — electric for short trips, petrol for long ones. Excellent if you actually plug it in. Owners who do not get the worst of both: petrol running costs plus the extra weight of a battery.

Deciding

  1. Can you charge where you park overnight? No — buy petrol or a hybrid, and disregard the running-cost comparisons.
  2. Yes? Work out your longest regular journey and check it against real-world range, with a margin for winter.
  3. Check local incentives and taxes, which vary hugely and can change the total cost either way.
  4. Be honest about how long you will keep it, because depreciation is where the electric case is weakest.
