Most of what gets taught about how to study has never been tested. Most of what has been tested points at one uncomfortable conclusion: the most popular revision methods are the weakest ones.
Re-reading and highlighting produce a feeling of progress rather than progress. The two methods that hold up are active recall — trying to retrieve the material from memory before looking — and spaced repetition — spreading reviews across days. Both feel harder and work better, and that is not a coincidence.
Why re-reading fails
By the third time you read a page it feels familiar. Your brain translates that familiarity into a judgement: I know this.
But what you have built is recognition, not recall. The difference is the difference between recognising a face in a photo and drawing it from memory.
Exams — and real work — always ask for recall. Nobody puts the text in front of you and asks whether it looks familiar.
Hence the classic experience: a student revises five times, walks out of the exam saying "I knew that." They did not know it. They recognised it.
Active recall
The principle in one line:
Close the source, get what is in it out of your head, then open it and correct yourself.
The difficulty you feel during the attempt is not a sign you do not understand — it is the process that fixes the material. The path you take to retrieve something strengthens every time you take it.
Ways to do it:
- The blank page. After finishing a topic, close everything and write down everything you remember. Then compare, and notice what was missing — that is precisely what needs review.
- Turn headings into questions. "Causes of inflation" becomes "What causes inflation?" Revise from the questions, not the text.
- Cards. Question on one side, answer on the other. The condition is that you actually answer before flipping, rather than flipping straight away.
- Explain it out loud to a person or a wall. Explaining cannot be done without retrieving, and any gap in your understanding surfaces immediately.
Spaced repetition
The second method is about timing rather than technique.
Forgetting is fast at first and then slows. Reviewing at the moment something is starting to slip — not before — is what re-fixes it for longer.
The practical consequence: three reviews across three days beat three reviews in one day, even though the time spent is identical.
A simple schedule is enough:

One week, applied
To try both on a single topic this week:
- Read the topic once, carefully. Once is enough.
- Close everything and write what you remember on a blank page. It will be less than you expected. That is normal.
- Open the source and correct in a different colour. What you corrected is your revision map.
- Two days later, write it again from memory without reading first. Review only the gaps.
- A week later, do it a third time. It will take minutes.
By the end of the week you will have spent less time than usual, with visibly better retention.
Small mistakes that break it
- Flipping the card before attempting the answer. It cancels the entire effect and turns it back into reading.
- Highlighting on the first read. You cannot know what matters before you understand the topic, so you end up with a fully coloured page.
- Copying notes out by hand without thinking. Copying is a hand movement, not retrieval.
- Relying on re-listening to a recording. Listening a second time is passive intake, exactly like re-reading.
- Studying everything equally. What you recall easily needs no time. Time goes to what you forget.
