VPN advertising is among the most aggressive in technology, and among the least accurate. The pitch is usually anonymity and protection from hackers. What the technology actually does is narrower, genuinely useful in specific situations, and worth understanding before paying for a subscription.
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server elsewhere, so your network operator cannot see which sites you visit and those sites see the VPN's address instead of yours. That is the whole function. It does not make you anonymous, does not stop viruses or phishing, and does not protect an account with a weak password.
What it actually does
Normally your traffic goes: your device → your network → the site.
Your internet provider sits in the middle and can see which sites you connect to. On a café or hotel network, whoever runs it occupies the same position.
With a VPN: your device → encrypted tunnel → VPN server → the site.
Two concrete consequences:
Your network sees only that you are connected to a VPN, not what you do inside it.
The site sees the VPN server's address, not yours — which changes your apparent location.
That is genuinely useful. It is also all of it.
What it does not do
This is where the advertising and the technology part ways.
It does not make you anonymous. The moment you log into an account, you have identified yourself regardless of where the traffic came from. Cookies, browser fingerprinting and your logged-in sessions all continue to work normally.
It does not remove trust — it moves it. Your provider can no longer see your traffic. The VPN company now can. You have swapped a company you pay for internet access for a company you pay for a tunnel. Whether that is an improvement depends entirely on which you trust more.

It does not secure a weak password. A stolen password works from any address.
It does not hide activity from the site you are using. If you are signed in, they know it is you.
The classic pitch — someone on the café network stealing your bank details — describes an era before HTTPS was universal. Today virtually every site encrypts traffic by default, so an eavesdropper sees which domains you contacted, not what you sent. A VPN hides that remaining detail. It is a real but much smaller benefit than the adverts imply.
When one is genuinely worth it
Clear cases:
- You are on a network you actively distrust — an employer's, a landlord's, a network with a captive portal that injects content.
- Your internet provider sells browsing data, which is legal in some countries.
- You need to appear to be in another country — most commonly for streaming libraries, which providers actively fight, so results vary.
- You are on a censored network and need to reach blocked services.
- You work with sensitive material and your employer requires it.
Weak cases:
- General "security" — two-factor authentication and a password manager do vastly more for the same money.
- Hiding from advertisers — they track by account and fingerprint, not IP.
- Torrenting, if that is the whole reason, deserves an honest look at what you are actually doing.
Choosing one, if you decide to
The market is saturated with paid reviews, so the criteria matter more than the rankings:
Avoid free VPNs. Servers and bandwidth cost real money. If there is no subscription, the revenue comes from somewhere — usually selling the browsing data you installed it to protect. This is not hypothetical; several free providers have been caught doing exactly that.
Look for an audited no-logs policy. Every provider claims no logs. Very few have had an independent auditor verify it. The claim on its own is worth nothing.
Check the jurisdiction, which determines who can compel disclosure.
Ignore the speed claims and test during the refund window. Speed depends on your distance to the server far more than on the brand.
Be sceptical of review sites. VPN affiliate commissions are unusually high, and much of the "best VPN" content is ranked by payout.
The honest summary
A VPN is a tool with one specific function: it moves the point at which your traffic becomes visible, from your network operator to your VPN provider.
For someone on a hostile network or reaching around geographic restrictions, that is worth paying for. For someone who mainly wants to be safer online, the money buys much more elsewhere — a password manager and two-factor authentication prevent the attacks that actually happen to ordinary people, and a VPN prevents almost none of them.

Does a VPN make me anonymous?
