The usual response to slow Wi-Fi is to pay for a faster plan. It is also usually the wrong one — because the bottleneck is rarely the line coming into the building.
Run a speed test standing next to the router, then again where the problem is. If the first is fine and the second is poor, your plan is not the problem — the wireless link is. Move the router higher and more central, use the 5 GHz band close by and 2.4 GHz far away, and put the devices that matter most on a cable.
First, find out where the problem is
Two minutes, and it decides everything that follows:
- Speed test standing beside the router, on the 5 GHz band.
- Speed test in the room where it is slow.

Where the router sits matters more than anything
Wi-Fi is radio. It spreads outward from the antenna, weakening with distance and absorbed by whatever it passes through.
Put it high, central, and in the open. A router in a corner cupboard on the floor is sending most of its signal into a wall and the ground.
What blocks signal, worst first:

Also worth knowing: a microwave oven interferes with 2.4 GHz directly because it operates at the same frequency. If your Wi-Fi collapses when someone heats lunch, that is why, and moving the router is the fix.
The two bands, and why it matters
Nearly every modern router broadcasts on both. They behave very differently:
2.4 GHz — travels further, passes through walls better, and is slower. It is also crowded: your neighbours' networks, cordless phones, baby monitors and Bluetooth all share it.
5 GHz — much faster and far less congested, but a shorter range and stopped more easily by walls.
The practical rule: 5 GHz in the same room or one wall away. 2.4 GHz for the far end of the house.
Many routers publish both under one name and choose for you, and that choice is often wrong — devices cling to 2.4 GHz long after 5 GHz became available. Splitting them into two named networks so you can pick manually is a common and effective fix.
Unplug the router, wait thirty seconds, plug it back in. It clears memory, re-picks a channel and re-establishes the provider connection. It sounds like a joke fix and it resolves a real share of intermittent problems.
What is actually using your bandwidth
Before blaming the connection, check what is consuming it:
- Video streaming, especially at 4K, and especially several at once
- Cloud backup and photo sync, which run silently and saturate uploads
- System and game updates downloading in the background
- Video calls, which need steady bandwidth in both directions
- Security cameras uploading continuously, around the clock
Uploads deserve special attention. Most home connections are far slower up than down, and a single large backup can make everything else feel broken while the download speed still tests fine.
Fixes, cheapest first
Free:
- Move the router — higher, more central, out of the cupboard.
- Restart it.
- Split the bands and connect deliberately.
- Change the Wi-Fi channel if your router lets you. In a block of flats, dozens of networks may be stacked on the same one.
- Update the router firmware — it fixes real performance bugs.
- Remove devices you no longer use from the network.
Cheap:
- Run an ethernet cable to whatever matters most — a desk, a TV, a games console. A cable beats any wireless fix, always, and it also frees up airtime for everything else.
- Replace a router more than about five years old. Standards have moved on considerably, and an old router caps every device in the house.
More expensive:
- A mesh system for a large or multi-storey home. Several units, one network, devices handed between them.
- An extender only as a last resort — it typically halves throughput, because it talks to both the router and your device over the same radio.
The realistic expectation
You will never see your advertised speed over Wi-Fi. Advertised figures are the line into the building, measured on a cable in ideal conditions. Wireless loses some to distance, walls, interference and the overhead of the protocol itself.
A good result is a strong, steady connection in the rooms you actually use — not a big number on a speed test taken beside the router.
