A computer that has become slow is rarely "worn out". It is almost always one of four specific, identifiable problems — and three of them cost nothing to fix.
Open your system's task manager, sort by usage, and see which resource is pinned: disk, memory, processor, or temperature. That single observation tells you which fix to apply. If the machine still has a mechanical hard drive, replacing it with an SSD is the largest improvement available and usually costs less than a phone case.
Step one: find out which resource is the bottleneck
Skip this and you will guess wrong.
Open Task Manager on Windows (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) or Activity Monitor on a Mac. Use the machine as normal for a minute and watch which column stays high.

Disk at 100% — the most common cause
If your machine has a spinning mechanical hard drive, it is the bottleneck for nearly everything. Modern operating systems assume the speed of solid-state storage, and on a mechanical drive they spend their time waiting.
Replacing it with an SSD is the single most effective upgrade in computing. A machine that took two minutes to reach a usable desktop typically does it in under fifteen seconds afterwards. Applications open immediately. It genuinely feels like a different computer, and it costs far less than one.
If you already have an SSD and the disk is still saturated, check free space. Below about 10–15% free, performance falls off a cliff — the system has nowhere to put temporary files or virtual memory.
Memory full
Symptoms: everything is fine until you open one more thing, and then the whole machine crawls.
Check the actual number before buying anything. If usage sits near the limit during normal work, more RAM will help and is inexpensive. If it sits comfortably below, adding more changes nothing at all.
Free fixes first:
- Close browser tabs. Each one holds memory, and dozens of open tabs are a leading cause of this exact complaint.
- Check what starts automatically — see below.
- Restart occasionally. Some programs leak memory over days of uptime.
CPU pinned
Sort by CPU usage and look at what is at the top. Usually it is identifiable:
- A browser tab running something heavy.
- Antivirus doing a full scan — normal, and it should end.
- System updates installing in the background — also normal, also temporary.
- Something you do not recognise, which is worth investigating.
If a single program is consistently responsible, the fix is that program, not the computer.
Heat — the invisible cause
This one gets missed because nothing looks maxed out.
When a processor gets too hot it deliberately slows itself down to avoid damage. The machine feels sluggish, the fan runs constantly, and no resource appears saturated.
The usual cause is dust blocking the vents and the fan. A laptop that has been used for a couple of years, especially on beds and sofas, accumulates a surprising amount.
- Blow out the vents with compressed air, holding the fan still so it does not spin freely.
- Use it on a hard surface. Soft furnishings block the intakes underneath, which is the single most common cause of overheating.
- Older machines may need the thermal paste replaced, which is a repair-shop job.
Startup programs — the free fix everyone skips
Software installs itself into your startup list without asking, and each entry costs boot time and memory permanently.
Windows: Task Manager → Startup tab. Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items.
Disable everything you do not need running from the moment you switch on. Chat apps, update checkers, printer utilities, game launchers. You can still open them manually — they simply do not need to be there from boot.
This is often the difference between a machine that is usable one minute after switch-on and one that is usable after five.
"PC optimiser" and "speed booster" software almost never helps, and often hurts by running its own background process permanently. Everything genuinely useful — managing startup items, freeing space, updating drivers — is already built into your operating system and free. Registry cleaners in particular carry real risk for no measurable gain.
The order to do things
Free, do them all:
- Restart. Genuinely. Many machines have not been restarted in weeks.
- Clear startup programs.
- Free up disk space to at least 15%.
- Close unused browser tabs and extensions. Extensions are a common and invisible drain.
- Run the updates — operating system and drivers. Graphics drivers especially.
- Clean the vents.
- Run one antivirus scan, then remove any second antivirus you find. Two running together fight each other and slow everything.
Cheap, in order of impact:
- SSD, if you still have a mechanical drive. Nothing else is close.
- More RAM, but only if you verified you are running out.
- A new battery if it no longer holds charge — some laptops throttle performance on a failing battery.
When it is genuinely time to replace it
Be honest about the arithmetic. If the machine is old enough that it no longer receives security updates, that is a real reason to replace it regardless of speed — an unpatched system is a risk no upgrade fixes.
But a five-year-old laptop with an SSD, enough RAM and clean vents handles ordinary work perfectly well. Most machines are replaced years before they need to be, because the actual problem was a full hard drive and forty startup programs.
